Gracious strangers
As an elderly person in Chile, you could step out your door and feel pretty confident you'd be looked after by strangers. Here, if someone's having a bit of trouble getting across the road or up some stairs, the nearest person will hurry over and give them a hand. And on buses and trains, men and women will vacate their seat as soon as they notice someone elderly, pregnant or holding a little kid. Australia's grim in comparison.

On a bus trip recently, a young man gave up his seat for an elderly man, and the elderly man refused to take it. (I think he may have been insulted.) So the poor young man then offered his seat to a young lady standing nearby, and *she* refused to take it too. I felt sorry for, and proud of, the young man. It reminded me that graciousness cuts both ways, and that sometimes it's just as hard to accept graciousness as it is to be gracious. (Sorry, I posted this as Nick before, then deleted the post.)
